Mulan is coming to the stage.
For all you seasoned travelers mark your calendars. Mr. A’s Mulan will premier December 17 at Dewan Sri Penang, located in Penang, Maylasia.
Artistic Directors, Gwen Teoh, Villenguez, of Gwen’s School of Dance and Janice Khoo, of A La pointe Dance Academy have invited Mr. Aaron to choreograph the full-length ballet Mulan.
Ms. Teoh and Mr. Aaron shared their combined passion to do a Chinese themed ballet. Mr. A had planned to present Mulan to Cebuano audiences several years back but the project got shelved for Balletcenter Cebu to focus on rebuilding it’s classical repertoire.
Ms. Teoh and Mr. A wanted a Chinese story: Hense, Mr. A suggested Mulan since he already had pieces of the puzzle in place. There won’t be any dancing cartoon characters in this one, as well as because of licensing no Disney music.
Mr. A’s ballet will follow the 9th century poem not the updated 16th century version that has a tragic ending. He wrote the libretto, with the help of company dancer Alexis Peña who sourced his archives of music and chose mostly music from the Chinese Classical Tradition.
Though the music is Traditional Chinese, must the choreography follows western classical ballet.
This will be a fusion of East meets West as they say!
Mr. A arrived in Penang June 22, 2015 to begin choreographing the ballet. On alternate days he rehearses at Ms. Teoh’s studio located at Jalan Fettes and Ms. Janice studio located at Bayan Lepas, in Penang.
Exciting experiences:
· Students from both schools get to dance together building friendships and learning from one another
· Though the majority of the students are of Chinese heritage themselves, most of the music is new to them therefor they are able to touch a part of their own history hands on by performing to the music.
· Mr. A suggested to Ms. Teoh to invite ballet students from other regions to participate. Ms. Angeline Yew of the Acts of Performing Arts in Kuala Lumpur eagerly agreed to have a group of her students join the performance.
Because of Mr. A’s ongoing project of increasing cross-cultural awareness, Mr. A suggested to Ms. Teoh; to invite students from Cebu City, Philippines to join the performance.
The numbers aren’t definite yet but a nuclear group is forming. This will be quite exciting to once again have dancers from Balletcenter, to perform abroad. (In 2010 Mr. A brought dancers from the Philippines to perform in Ms. Teoh’s “Blue Concert”. It was an amazing experience for our dancers to touch the lives of people in another country.
Hui Theng Mui, a longtime student and teacher of Ms. Khoo, will perform the role of Mulan. Ms. Mui is an advanced dancer with marvelous acting ability, sure to delight the audiences.
The role of the captain will be danced my Mr. Mhynard Etis, Balletcenter’s Principal Male Dancer. Mr. Etis will begin rehearsals in Penang in mid November.
Because of the dearth of male dancers in Malaysia the senior female dancers at both studios will alternate dancing a girl part and the part of the warriors.
Ms. Khoo has graciously agreed to dance the Principal role of The General! Her superior technic and winning personality is sure to be a most welcome addition to the cast.
